Things are progressing very quickly now. I met with the electrician for our planning walkthrough today, and first of all I've got to say it is very impressive being there when everyone is working. There were two plumbers, an HVAC guy, two general builders' guys working non-stop, and a couple other I-don't-know-who's coming and going.
It was a little nerve-wracking going into the electrical walkthrough, because they talk about placement of every switch, outlet, and light in the whole house. Fortunately I'd spent good time researching and documenting our "wants", and it really helped that the same electrician did their spec house that ours is a copy of.
The electrician was great: easy to work with, good attitude, and didn't bat an eye at a few of the (what I thought were) unusual requests. When I said I wanted an outlet in a few closets way up high for wireless access points, an outlet inside the kitchen island for the fancy mixer lift, and switches by both sides of the bed to control the bedroom lights, he just marked the studs and moved on.
We got to talking about kitchen lighting, and:
Electrician: "What type of lights above the island?"
Me: "Some type of hanging light, probably 2 or 3 pendant-type things."
Electrician: "OK, we'll need to know how many."
Me: "By when?"
Electrician: "Tomorrow morning."
Me: "..............."
So we have some research to do tonight :)
I've decided to do all the low voltage wiring myself (Cat6 networking, RG6 coax tv, in-wall and ceiling speakers). I was shocked to learn that my opportunity to do so will be 4 days from now, as they will be ready to insulate and drywall starting next week. I will be staying home from our normal Memorial Day trip up north to pull a ton of cables. Exciting, nervious! Can't wait to see drywall start going up next week!
